Golf Strength Training

Strength training has given a new twist to the game of golf. With the help of strength training exercises golf players have improved their performance miraculously. There are many golfers who spend their time and money in reading about golf or in paying consulting fee. But those who have come to understand the importance of strength or power training have gained a lot for the betterment of their fitness as well as performance in game.

What to do golf strength training

Working out at home gym may not serve the real purpose of a golf player. Leg and back injury is quite common among golfers. Therefore it is always better to consult a trainer to learn the proper strength training exercises aimed at particular muscle groups instrumental in the game of golf. This is because the game of golf requires quick movement, muscle flexibility and proper coordination between your body systems. Hence a targeted strength training program may help you gear up for the golf playing. A basic program for the strength training for golf includes following exercises and workouts:

Warm up exercises

Before going for the golf strength training exercises some warm up exercises are needed. It makes your body prepare to withstand with the other golf specific exercises. To warm up your body a treadmill may be very beneficial for you. Weight lifting may also help you out in this connection.

Leg press workouts

With the help of leg press workouts you can strengthen your Glutes, hamstring and quadriceps. In other words legs and butt muscles are strengthened with leg press exercises.

Leg squats

It also involves hamstrings, quadriceps and Glutes. Leg squats help in strengthening the hips’ and leg’s muscles.

Dumbbell press

This workout involves anterior deltoid, triceps, and pectoral muscles.  Thus dumbbell press workout is aimed at strengthening back of arms, shoulders and chest.

Cable rows

It involves stabilizing muscles of shoulder, back and biceps. This exercise is done in seated position where torso is kept at the perpendicular to the floor.

Lateral raises with dumbbell

This exercise is aimed at strengthening shoulder muscles in which one is supposed to stand in upright position with dumbbell hanging at the sides. Then dumbbell is lifted with controlled movements.

Crunch

In this exercise the target is abdominal muscles. Here knees and hips are kept at 90 degree and arms are folded while your chin should be tucked to the chest. And upper back is lifted off the floor to curl the body. This exercise needs specific training and is vital for a golf player.

Flexibility

Your muscles need to be quite flexible if you want to be good golfer. To get the optimum flexible muscles there are many stretching exercise which you can learn from a trainer. Stretching exercises include spinal twist, knee flex, side bending and cardiovascular training exercises. These stretching exercises may give you an edge over your opponent as all these are aimed at giving you the much needed quickness and stamina to heat the ball with concentration. If done properly these exercises may make you a renowned golfer like Tiger Wood.
